What tE4 means on a GE dryer
The tE4 error code on a GE dryer indicates a fault with the outlet thermistor, which is the temperature-sensing component that monitors air temperature at the dryer's exhaust outlet. The control board triggers this code when the thermistor's signal voltage reads above 4.8V or below 0.2V continuously for more than 5 seconds. Under normal operating conditions, the thermistor produces a voltage signal that varies with temperature, staying well within those boundary thresholds. A reading outside this range tells the control board the sensor circuit has either lost continuity or developed a short, making accurate temperature monitoring impossible.
The outlet thermistor is a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) resistor, meaning its resistance decreases as temperature rises. The control board interprets the resulting voltage drop across the circuit to determine exhaust temperature. When the thermistor circuit goes open, voltage spikes toward the upper supply rail, which can push the signal above 4.8V. When the circuit shorts to ground, voltage collapses toward zero, pushing it below 0.2V. Both conditions are outside the valid sensing range and will trigger tE4.
The most likely causes are a disconnected or damaged thermistor connector, broken wiring in the thermistor harness, or a failed thermistor itself. Because the first diagnostic step is to inspect the connector and wiring, technicians should start there before condemning the sensor. Connector pins can back out or corrode, particularly in the high-heat environment near the exhaust duct, and a simple reseating of the connector will sometimes resolve the fault immediately.

Common causes of tE4
- 01
Loose or disconnected thermistor connector
Wiring / connectionThe connector linking the outlet thermistor to the wiring harness can work loose from vibration or become unseated during previous service. Inspect the connector at the thermistor and reseat it firmly to see if the error clears.
- 02
Damaged or broken thermistor wiring
Part replacementThe wires running to the outlet thermistor can crack, fray, or break, especially near the exhaust duct where heat and movement stress the harness. Visually trace the wiring from the connector to the control board and check for any visible damage or broken conductors.
- 03
Failed outlet thermistor
Part replacementThe thermistor itself can fail open or short internally, producing a voltage signal that is permanently out of range. If the connector and wiring check out correctly, measure the thermistor's resistance and compare it to expected values for the ambient temperature.
- 04
Corroded connector pins
Wiring / connectionHeat and moisture near the exhaust outlet can cause the thermistor connector pins to corrode, increasing resistance in the circuit and causing erratic or out-of-range voltage readings. Inspect the connector terminals closely and clean or replace the connector if corrosion is present.
- 05
Faulty control board
Part replacementIf the thermistor, wiring, and connectors all test correctly, the control board's thermistor input circuit may have failed, producing a false voltage reading. This is the least common cause and should only be considered after all other components are confirmed good.
