GE Oven Error Code ENTERING SALES MODE

ENTERING SALES MODE means the oven's control board detected a 120V-only power supply during startup, with both the L1-L2 and L1-N voltages reading between 90VAC and 150VAC. This is a built-in display mode designed for showrooms where a full 240VAC circuit is not available. The oven will power the display but will not produce heat in this state. It is triggered either by a special sales cord or by a wiring issue at the outlet or terminal block.

The oven will not heat in sales mode, so there is no immediate burn or fire hazard from the oven itself. However, if the condition is caused by a wiring fault at the outlet or panel rather than a sales cord, that underlying wiring issue should be inspected and corrected by a qualified electrician before the oven is used. Do not attempt to bypass the condition or force the oven to heat without resolving the root cause.

If the cause is simply a sales display cord that needs to be swapped for a standard residential 240VAC cord, the cost is typically in the range of $15 to $50 for the cord itself, which a capable DIYer can replace. If the issue requires an electrician to correct outlet or panel wiring, expect costs in the range of $100 to $300 or more depending on the extent of the wiring work needed. Control board replacement, if the board itself is at fault, can range from $150 to $400 or more for parts alone.

To exit sales mode, you need to ensure the oven is connected to a proper 240VAC power supply. Check that the power cord is the correct residential 240VAC appliance cord and not a special 120VAC sales display cord. Then verify the wall outlet is correctly wired with two separate hot legs, each reading approximately 120VAC to neutral and approximately 240VAC between them. Once the correct voltage is present at startup, the oven will exit sales mode automatically.

Resetting the oven by cutting power at the breaker will not permanently clear sales mode if the underlying cause is still present. The control board checks the incoming voltage every time power is applied, so if the supply or cord is still producing a 120V-only signature, the oven will re-enter sales mode immediately upon restart. The condition must be resolved at the wiring or cord level, not through a control reset.
