GE Oven Error Code PROBE

PROBE on a GE oven means the control system cannot detect a valid connection to the meat probe. This happens when the probe cable is not fully inserted into the oven wall receptacle, the probe is not placed in the food, or a probe-based cooking mode like Temp Cook/Hold or Auto Roast was selected without the probe connected. Correcting the probe connection typically resolves the error right away.

The PROBE error itself is not a sign of a dangerous condition. The oven displays this code to prevent a probe cooking function from running without accurate temperature feedback, which protects against undercooking food rather than posing an appliance hazard. The oven will not proceed with probe-based cooking until the connection issue is resolved. You can still use the oven for standard baking or roasting modes that do not require the probe.

If the issue is just an improperly seated probe or a mode selected without the probe connected, there is no cost at all since no parts are needed. If the probe itself is damaged and needs replacement, a compatible meat probe typically costs in the range of $20 to $60 depending on the model. A damaged wall receptacle is a more involved repair and could run $75 to $200 or more including parts and labor if a technician is needed.

Start by pressing the cable end of the probe firmly into the receptacle on the oven wall until it seats completely. Then insert the probe tip into the thickest part of the food you are cooking. If you triggered the error by pressing Temp Cook/Hold or Auto Roast before connecting the probe, connect the probe first and then restart the cooking function. If the error continues after proper connection, the probe or receptacle may need to be tested and possibly replaced.

Simply resetting the oven by cycling power will not permanently clear the PROBE error if the underlying connection issue is not addressed. The code will return as soon as a probe cooking function is selected again without a properly connected probe. The correct fix is to seat the probe cable securely in the wall receptacle and insert the probe into the food before starting a probe-dependent cooking mode.
