Error code 0002 on a GE refrigerator indicates that the FF2 thermistor, also referred to as the Refrigerator 2 thermistor, is reading outside of its expected operating range. Thermistors are temperature-sensing resistors whose resistance value changes predictably with temperature. When the control board receives a signal from the FF2 thermistor that falls outside the acceptable voltage or resistance window, it logs this fault code and may alter or suspend normal cooling operations to protect the refrigerator compartment.

The FF2 thermistor is typically positioned in the fresh food or refrigerator section, often near the evaporator or air duct to monitor compartment temperature accurately. An out-of-range reading can mean the thermistor is sending a signal that is either too high or too low, which usually points to an open circuit, a short to ground, or a degraded sensor element. Wiring harness damage, corroded connector pins, or a failed thermistor itself are the most common root causes.

Diagnosing this fault involves inspecting the thermistor's resistance at a known temperature and comparing it to the expected specification, as well as checking the wiring harness and connector between the thermistor and the main control board. A damaged or pinched wire can mimic a failed sensor, so both the component and its circuit path should be evaluated before replacing parts.
