Error code 38 on a GE washer indicates a Vent Damper Fault. It means the washer's control board commanded the vent damper to change position but either received no feedback confirming the transition occurred, or the damper failed to move at all. The fault involves the damper motor, the position feedback sensor, or the wiring connecting them to the control board.

A power reset may temporarily clear the code from the display, but it will return if the underlying fault is still present. Error code 38 reflects a real electrical or mechanical condition with the vent damper system, so the root cause must be repaired to resolve it permanently. Resetting is only useful as a first step to confirm whether the fault is intermittent.

Repair costs vary depending on which component has failed. A damper motor replacement typically falls in the range of $50 to $150 for the part alone, with labor adding $75 to $200 depending on the service provider and your location.
