Error code 40 on a GE washer indicates a Vent Damper Fault. It means the washer commanded its vent damper to open or close but did not receive confirmation that the transition occurred, or received no feedback signal from the damper door at all. The fault involves the damper motor, the position feedback sensor, or the wiring connecting them to the control board.

Running the washer with an active code 40 is not recommended. A malfunctioning vent damper can disrupt proper airflow in the machine, which may affect wash or drying cycles and could potentially lead to moisture-related issues inside the unit over time. It is best to resolve the fault before continuing regular use.

Repair costs vary depending on which component has failed. A replacement damper motor or feedback sensor typically falls in the range of $30 to $100 for the part alone. If a professional technician is needed, labor charges can add $80 to $200 depending on your location and the complexity of access. A control board replacement, if required, is a more expensive repair and can range from $150 to $350 for the part.

If the motor tests correctly, inspect the damper door sensor and all associated wiring harness connectors for damage or corrosion.

A power reset may temporarily clear the code from the display, but it will not fix the underlying fault. If the damper motor, feedback sensor, or wiring has failed, the code will return as soon as the washer attempts to operate the damper again. A reset is only useful as a first step to confirm whether the fault is intermittent or persistent.
