GE Washer Error Code 72

Error code 72 is an Inverter Spin Redundancy fault. It means the Inverter Motor Control module detected that the basket was rotating while the door was unlocked or open. The washer shuts down automatically as a safety measure. The fault most commonly points to a problem with the door lock assembly or its wiring.

The code itself indicates the safety system is working as intended, as the machine stopped operation when it detected a conflict between door status and basket rotation. However, the underlying cause, typically a faulty door lock, should be repaired promptly. A door lock that fails to engage properly could allow the machine to spin without the door being securely latched.

If the repair involves replacing the door lock assembly, parts typically range from $30 to $80 depending on the specific model, with labor adding additional cost if a technician is hired. Wiring repairs may cost less if no parts are needed. If the IMC board is at fault, that repair is more involved and parts alone can range from $100 to $250 or more.

Start by inspecting the wiring harness connected to the door lock assembly for loose connectors, corrosion, or visible damage. If the wiring checks out, the door lock assembly itself is the next component to test and most likely replace. In rare cases where both components test correctly, the IMC board may need to be evaluated.

A power reset may temporarily clear the fault code, but the error will return if the root cause is not repaired. Simply unplugging the machine and plugging it back in does not fix a failed door lock or a wiring problem. A proper repair of the door lock assembly or harness is required for the code to stay cleared.
