Error code 87 on a GE washer means the accelerometer board has reported a fault to the main control. The accelerometer board is a sensor mounted to the outer tub that monitors drum movement and vibration during the spin cycle. When it fails or loses communication, the washer cannot safely manage spin speed and will interrupt operation. The first diagnostic step is running Service Mode spin test 14 and confirming the accelerometer board is securely mounted to the tub.

It is not advisable to continue using the washer while error 87 is active. The accelerometer board plays a direct role in monitoring tub balance and controlling spin speed. Without reliable sensor input, the washer may not detect an out-of-balance load, which could lead to excessive vibration, movement, or mechanical stress on the machine. Address the fault before resuming normal use.

Resetting the washer by unplugging it for a few minutes may temporarily clear the error code, but it will return if the underlying problem is not corrected. If the accelerometer board is loose or a connector is intermittently seated, the fault will reappear as soon as the washer runs through a spin cycle. A proper repair requires physically inspecting and securing the accelerometer board and its wiring connections.
