GE Washer Error Code 98

Error code 98 indicates that the main control board could not communicate with the humidity sensor board for 10 seconds via the I2C data bus. The washer sends a request to read humidity data, and when no response is received within that window, it faults out and stops the cycle. This error points to a communication breakdown along the wiring path connecting the humidity/temperature board, the accelerometer board, and the main board.

Error 98 will typically halt the wash cycle, so the washer may not complete normal operation while the fault is active. Running the machine in this condition is not recommended because the humidity sensor is part of the control system's monitoring function. It is best to diagnose and resolve the communication fault before resuming regular use.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error code from the display, but if the underlying wiring or component fault is still present, the error will return once the washer attempts to read the humidity sensor again. A reset alone is not a repair. The communication path between the sensor boards and the main board must be physically inspected and the root cause corrected for the fault to stay resolved.

Many cases of error 98 are caused by loose or disconnected wiring connectors, which a knowledgeable DIYer can address by carefully inspecting and reseating the connectors at the humidity sensor board (J101), the accelerometer board (J302 and J301), and the main board (J901).
