The D5 code means the washer completed 3 consecutive wash cycles without detecting any lid switch activity, which the control board interprets as a lid switch circuit failure. The lid switch is supposed to signal the board each time the lid is opened between cycles. When that signal never arrives across 3 full cycles, the machine flags the fault. On most GE units this is treated as a critical fault that stops operation.

You should not continue running the washer while the D5 fault is active. The lid switch is a safety component that prevents the drum from spinning with the lid open. If the switch circuit is not functioning correctly, that safety protection may not be reliable. Resolve the fault before resuming normal use.

Repair costs vary depending on what component has failed. A replacement lid switch assembly typically costs in the range of $20 to $60 for the part. If you hire a technician, expect to add $80 to $150 or more in labor depending on your location. Control board replacement, if needed, is a more expensive repair and can range from $150 to $350 or higher for parts alone.
