E0 on a GE washer indicates a serial communication error between the external card reader and the main control board. The board is not receiving a valid signal from the card reader module. This error is most common on GE washers installed in multi-unit housing or commercial settings that use payment card systems. The washer will not operate normally until the communication link is re-established.

The E0 error is specifically tied to the card reader communication circuit, not the washer's core mechanical or water-handling systems. However, the unit is designed to halt normal operation when this error is present, so running a cycle may not be possible regardless. Do not attempt to bypass the card reader system, as doing so may violate the terms of a commercial lease or building management agreement.

A reset may temporarily clear the E0 code from the display, but it will return immediately if the underlying communication fault is still present. The card reader and main board must successfully complete their serial handshake for the error to stay cleared. Resetting is useful as a first step to confirm the fault is active and repeatable, but it is not a repair solution on its own.

Some causes of E0 are DIY-friendly, such as reseating a loose wiring harness connector or cleaning corroded terminals. However, if the card reader module or main control board needs replacement, those repairs require correct part sourcing and comfort working with appliance electronics. If you are not familiar with connector diagnostics or continuity testing, a qualified technician is the safer choice.
