The E4 code on a GE washer means the pump-sensing circuit did not detect that water was successfully removed from the washer within 3 minutes during a drain cycle. This is called a slow pump error. It points to a restriction or fault in the drain system, ranging from a blocked hose or high standpipe to a worn drain pump motor.

It is not recommended to continue running wash cycles while the E4 error is active. The washer has already halted because it could not drain water within the required time, meaning the tub may still contain standing water. Running additional cycles without resolving the drain issue could stress the pump further and may leave laundry sitting in water for extended periods.

If the cause is a clogged filter, kinked hose, or high standpipe, the repair can often be done at no cost beyond your time. If the drain pump motor needs replacement, parts typically range from $30 to $100 depending on the model, with professional labor adding $75 to $200 or more depending on your location and the service provider. Wiring or control board repairs at the sensing circuit level tend to fall on the higher end of that cost range.

Start by checking the standpipe height and looking for any kinks or clogs in the drain hose. Next, clean the drain pump filter and check the pump impeller for debris. If the drain path is clear and the error persists, test the drain pump motor for proper function. A faulty pump or a wiring issue in the sensing circuit will require component replacement to resolve the fault.

A reset may temporarily clear the E4 code from the display, but it will return as soon as the washer attempts another drain cycle if the underlying problem has not been fixed. Resetting is useful for confirming the error is repeatable, but it is not a repair. The drain system issue must be identified and corrected to prevent the code from returning.
