GE Washer Error Code E5

E5 on a GE washer is a fill error code. It means the electronic control board did not detect that the water level reached the low threshold within 20 minutes, or the high threshold within 40 minutes, during a fill cycle. The washer stops the cycle to prevent running with insufficient water. The issue typically points to a water supply problem, a faulty inlet valve, or a wiring fault in the fill circuit.

You should not continue running the washer while the E5 error is active. The control board halts the cycle because the tub has not filled to the required level, and running the drum without adequate water can stress the motor and pump components. Resolve the fill issue before resuming normal use.

Performing a reset by unplugging the washer or cycling the power may temporarily clear the E5 code, but the error will return on the next fill cycle if the underlying problem has not been corrected. A reset is useful for confirming a repair was successful, but it does not address the root cause. The water supply, inlet valve, and related wiring should be diagnosed and repaired before relying on a reset.

Start by confirming that both hot and cold water supply faucets are fully open and that the fill hoses are not kinked. Next, disconnect the fill hoses and check the inlet valve screens for sediment buildup, cleaning them if needed. If the water supply is confirmed good, test the water inlet valve solenoids for proper resistance and check for voltage at the valve connectors. If the valve tests faulty, replacement is required.

If the fix is simply cleaning the inlet valve screens or adjusting the supply faucets, there is no parts cost involved. If the water inlet valve solenoid or the entire inlet valve assembly needs replacement, parts typically range from $30 to $80 depending on the model.
