GE Washer Error Code E6

The E6 code means the washer's pump-sensing circuit has detected that water is not being pumped out of the tub even though the drain pump is energized and the pressure switch confirms water is present. The control board stops the cycle when this conflict is detected to prevent overflow or component damage. The most common causes are a loose harness connection at the pump, a clogged pump impeller, or a failed pump motor.

A reset may temporarily clear the E6 code, but it will return as soon as the washer attempts to drain again if the underlying problem has not been fixed. To permanently clear the fault, the root cause such as a clogged pump, loose connector, or failed component must be resolved first. Resetting without a repair is not a long-term solution.

Repair costs vary depending on the cause. Clearing a clogged pump filter is essentially free if done yourself, while replacing a drain pump motor typically costs between $75 and $200 for the part, plus labor if a technician is hired. A faulty pressure switch is generally a less expensive fix, with parts usually ranging from $20 to $60. Getting a diagnostic inspection from a qualified technician will give you a more precise estimate based on your specific situation.

Start by checking the wiring harness connector at the drain pump and at the control board for loose or corroded pins and reseat any connections that are not fully secure. Next, clean the pump filter and check the impeller for debris. If the connections and filter are in good condition and the error persists, test the pump motor and pressure switch for proper operation, and replace whichever component is faulty.

Running the washer with an active E6 error is not recommended. Because the machine cannot confirm that water is draining properly, continuing to operate it risks leaving standing water in the tub, which can cause mold growth, leaks, or further damage to the pump or control board. The washer should be serviced before resuming normal use.
