GE Washer Error Code Sud

The Sud code means the washer's Motor Control Unit has detected an excessive suds condition inside the drum. It identifies this by monitoring the current draw on the drive motor, and triggers when foam creates enough resistance to cause an abnormal reading. The washer pauses the cycle to protect the motor from overload. This can be caused by too much detergent, the wrong detergent type, a heavy load, or a failing drain pump.

You should not force the machine through a cycle while the Sud code is active. The washer paused automatically to protect the drive motor from strain caused by suds resistance. Continuing to run it without resolving the suds issue risks overloading the motor and potentially damaging mechanical components. Clear the suds first, then resume normal operation.

If the cause is simply too much or the wrong detergent, there is no repair cost beyond adjusting your detergent habits. If the drain pump is found to be faulty, replacement pump parts typically range from around $30 to $100 depending on the specific model, with professional labor adding $75 to $200 on top of that. Diagnosing whether the issue is detergent-related or pump-related before ordering parts can save unnecessary expense.

If you recently used too much detergent or the wrong type, run a Rinse and Spin cycle to clear the suds, then run a Normal cycle with no detergent added. Going forward, use only HE-compatible detergent in the correct amount. If the code returns despite proper detergent use, inspect the drain pump for clogs, wear, or unusual noise, as a pump problem can also trigger this error.

A reset may clear the displayed code temporarily, but it will not resolve the underlying cause. If excessive suds are still present in the drum, the MCU will detect the same elevated motor current and trigger the code again during the next cycle. Address the detergent or pump issue first, then restart the machine for a lasting resolution.
