E6.3 indicates a fault in the igniter circuit. It means the IFC board has detected that the igniter relay is stuck in the closed position, or that the igniter circuit is open or shorted. The furnace will not complete a heating cycle until this fault is resolved.

The furnace will not produce heat while E6.3 is active, so there is no immediate combustion safety risk from the code itself. However, a stuck-closed relay condition could cause the igniter to stay energized longer than intended, accelerating wear on the component. The furnace should be diagnosed and repaired promptly rather than left in a fault state.

A power reset may temporarily clear the fault code and allow the furnace to attempt another startup, but if the underlying fault in the igniter, wiring, or relay is still present, E6.3 will return during the next heat call. Resetting is useful for confirming whether the fault is intermittent, but it does not repair any failed component. A proper diagnosis using voltage and continuity testing is needed to permanently resolve the error.

Some steps, such as inspecting wiring, reseating connectors, and testing continuity on the igniter, can be performed by a knowledgeable DIYer with a multimeter and the power off. However, voltage measurements at the IFC terminals require working near live 120 VAC circuits, which carries real shock risk. Replacing an IFC board or igniter element is within reach of experienced DIYers, but if you are not comfortable with electrical diagnostics, calling a qualified technician is the safer choice.
