Er 22 on a Jenn-Air cooktop signals a defective keypad condition. The control unit continuously monitors the keypad circuit for proper electrical continuity and expected resistance values. When it detects either a short-circuit or a discontinuation (open circuit) within the keypad evaluation circuit, it flags the fault and shuts itself off. This automatic cutoff occurs within 3.5 to 7.5 seconds of the fault being detected, which is a protective measure designed to prevent unintended burner activation or runaway operation caused by a stuck or malfunctioning key.

The keypad, also referred to as the UI (user interface) board, is the touch-sensitive input panel on the cooktop surface. Over time, moisture intrusion, heat cycling, physical damage, or manufacturing defects can cause the membrane layer of the keypad to develop internal shorts between switch contacts, or cause a break in the circuit traces that carry signals to the control unit. Either condition disrupts the normal signal flow and triggers the Er 22 fault. Because the control unit shuts down within seconds, the cooktop will not remain operational while this fault is active.

The primary corrective action is replacement of the cooktop UI board. This involves disconnecting power to the unit before beginning any repair, removing the necessary panels and components to access the board, installing the replacement part, reassembling all panels and components fully, and then restoring power. It is important to complete full reassembly before powering the unit back on, as partial assembly during testing can create additional safety hazards.
