Error code 4-2 means the control board has detected that the wash motor is causing the cycle to start and stop repeatedly instead of running continuously. The dishwasher is unable to complete a normal wash cycle in this condition. The fault points to a problem in the wash motor system, which includes the motor itself, the pump assembly, and the associated wiring.

Start by checking the pump assembly for blockages such as debris or foreign objects, which is a no-cost repair if that turns out to be the cause. This will help you determine whether the problem is the motor itself, the wiring harness, or the control board.
