Error code 5-2 means the control board never detected the door switch opening between cycles. The dishwasher expects the door to be opened between wash cycles as confirmation of normal use. If the switch contacts are stuck closed or the door was simply never opened, the control logs 5-2 and stops the machine.

The dishwasher will not complete a cycle while 5-2 is active, so continued use is not possible until the code is cleared. The error itself does not indicate a water leak or electrical hazard, but you should not attempt to bypass the door switch, as it also serves as a safety interlock that prevents the machine from running with the door open.

Disconnect power to the dishwasher before testing. Locate the door switch inside the latch assembly at the top of the door frame. Disconnect the wiring harness connector and set a multimeter to resistance mode. With the door open and the latch released, the switch should read open circuit (OL). When you manually actuate the latch plunger, the switch should read near zero ohms. If the switch reads continuity in both positions, the contacts are stuck closed and the switch needs replacement.

Start by opening the door completely, closing it firmly, and pressing the Start/Resume key. If the dishwasher runs normally, make a habit of opening the door between every cycle. If the code returns, unplug the dishwasher, then inspect and test the door switch contacts with a multimeter while manually operating the latch mechanism. A switch that shows continuity in the open position needs to be replaced.

If the fix is simply opening the door between cycles, the cost is zero. If the door switch needs replacement, the part typically costs between $20 and $60 depending on the specific Jenn-Air model. A full latch assembly, if the mechanical components are also damaged, generally runs $40 to $100.
