What F2E4-2 means on a Jenn-Air oven
The F2E4-2 error code on a Jenn-Air oven indicates an over-temperature condition at the Human Machine Interface (HMI), specifically caused by a shorted HMI temperature sensor. The HMI is the control panel assembly that houses the touchpad, display, and associated electronics. A dedicated temperature sensor monitors the HMI board to protect sensitive electronics from heat damage. When that sensor shorts, it sends an invalid signal to the main control board, which interprets the reading as a dangerously high temperature and triggers the F2E4-2 fault to shut down operation.
A shorted temperature sensor typically presents as a very low or zero resistance reading across the sensor terminals, rather than the expected resistance value that would correspond to normal ambient temperatures. This condition can result from physical damage to the sensor or its wiring, heat degradation of the sensor element, or a failed solder joint on the HMI board itself. Moisture intrusion into the control panel area can also cause sensor circuit shorts.
The first diagnostic step is to unplug the range or disconnect power, then carefully inspect all wiring connections at the main control board and at the HMI connector designated J1. Loose, corroded, or damaged pins at J1 can mimic a sensor short by creating intermittent or low-resistance paths in the signal circuit. If connections appear intact and secure, the HMI assembly itself is the likely failed component, as the temperature sensor is typically integrated into the HMI board and is not serviceable separately.

Common causes of F2E4-2
- 01
Faulty HMI temperature sensor (shorted)
Part replacementThe temperature sensor integrated into the HMI board has shorted internally, producing an invalid resistance reading. This is the most direct cause of the F2E4-2 fault and typically requires replacing the HMI assembly.
- 02
Loose or damaged wiring at HMI connector J1
Wiring / connectionA loose, corroded, or bent pin at the J1 connector between the HMI and main control can create a low-resistance path that mimics a sensor short. Inspect and reseat the connector after disconnecting power.
- 03
Damaged wiring harness between HMI and main control
Part replacementChafed or pinched wires in the harness running from the HMI to the main control board can short the sensor signal wire to ground or another conductor. Look for visible insulation damage along the harness routing.
- 04
Failed main control board
Part replacementIf the HMI and all wiring connections check out correctly, the main control board may be misreading the sensor circuit due to a fault in its own input circuitry. This is a less common cause but should be considered after ruling out the HMI and wiring.
- 05
Moisture or contamination in the HMI assembly
Wiring / connectionSteam or cleaning fluid that has entered the control panel area can cause conductive contamination across the sensor circuit, producing a short condition. Inspect the HMI area for signs of moisture or residue.
