Code 8-1 signals a slow drain condition. The dishwasher control detected that water in the tub is not draining within the expected time frame. This points to a blockage somewhere in the drain path, from the sump check valve to the household plumbing, or a fractured impeller inside the drain pump.

Running the dishwasher while code 8-1 is active is not recommended. A slow or failed drain means water may be left standing in the tub, which can lead to odors, potential overflow, and additional stress on the pump motor. Resolve the drain restriction before resuming normal use.

If the cause is a simple blockage in the drain hose or garbage disposal, the repair may cost little to nothing beyond your time. If the drain loop check valve needs replacement, parts and labor typically run in the range of $50 to $150. A fractured drain pump impeller usually means replacing the pump assembly, which can range from $100 to $250 depending on parts and labor costs in your area.

Start by disconnecting power to the dishwasher. Then inspect the entire drain path: check whether the garbage disposal knockout plug has been removed, look for kinks or clogs in the drain hose, and verify that the drain loop check valve moves freely. Clear any debris from the sump area as well. If the drain path is clear and the error returns, the drain pump impeller may be fractured and the pump will need to be inspected or replaced.

Resetting the dishwasher by disconnecting power may temporarily clear the code from the display, but the code will return if the underlying drain problem is not fixed. The condition that caused slow draining, whether a blockage or a broken pump component, must be corrected before the error will stay cleared.
