Maytag Dryer Error Code 15

Error code 15 means the control board has detected that the thermistor is reading outside its expected resistance range. The thermistor is the temperature sensor that monitors air temperature inside the dryer. The code indicates either the sensor has failed, the wiring to it is damaged, or the connector is corroded.

Running the dryer with code 15 active is not recommended. Without accurate thermistor data, the control board cannot properly regulate heat, which risks overheating the drum and laundry or running without adequate heat at all. Some models will halt the heating cycle entirely when this code is present. Address the fault before continued use.

Unplug the dryer, access the thermistor, and disconnect its wiring harness. Set a multimeter to the ohms setting and probe both thermistor terminals. At room temperature, a functional thermistor should show a resistance reading within the range specified in your model's service documentation, commonly around 10,000 ohms. A reading of zero (short) or infinite resistance (open circuit) confirms the thermistor has failed and needs replacement. If the thermistor reads correctly, check the harness for continuity from the sensor to the control board connector.

Start by unplugging the dryer and locating the thermistor, usually near the exhaust duct or heating element housing. Use a multimeter to measure the thermistor's resistance and compare it to the specification in your model's service manual. A room-temperature reading of roughly 10,000 to 11,000 ohms is typical for many Maytag thermistors, but confirm with your specific model. If the reading is open, shorted, or far outside spec, replace the thermistor. If the sensor reads correctly, inspect the wiring harness and connector for damage or corrosion.

If the thermistor is the cause, the part typically costs between $10 and $30 and takes about 30 minutes to replace for someone comfortable with basic appliance repair. A wiring repair costs little to nothing in parts if you are soldering or using connectors you have on hand.
