What F7 means on a Maytag oven
The F7 error code on a Maytag oven indicates a shorted function key on the control panel keypad. The keypad consists of a membrane switch assembly with multiple touch-sensitive zones. When one of these zones develops an internal short, it sends a continuous or erroneous signal to the electronic control board. A critical consequence of this fault is that the control board can no longer properly recognize input from the Cancel key, leaving the oven unable to respond to commands or exit its current operating mode.
The root cause is almost always a failure within the membrane keypad itself. Over time, heat, moisture, and repeated pressing cause the conductive layers inside the membrane to degrade, crack, or contact each other unintentionally. This unintended contact mimics a held or pressed key, creating a persistent signal that the control board interprets as a short. Less commonly, the ribbon cable connecting the keypad to the control board can develop a fault at the connector, or the control board itself may have a damaged input circuit, though keypad failure is by far the more frequent culprit.
Because the Cancel key becomes unrecognizable when this fault is active, the oven cannot be safely cleared through normal operation. Power must be removed from the appliance immediately upon seeing this code and the unit should not be operated again until the fault is diagnosed and repaired. Disconnecting power at the breaker or by unplugging the unit prevents potential hazards from an oven that cannot respond to user input.

Common causes of F7
- 01
Failed membrane keypad
Part replacementThe most common cause is a degraded or internally shorted membrane switch assembly. Heat and repeated use cause the conductive layers inside to contact each other unintentionally, generating a constant false key signal.
- 02
Moisture or debris under the keypad
Part replacementSpills or steam that seep beneath the keypad overlay can bridge contacts within the membrane, creating a short. Inspect the keypad surface for signs of discoloration, bubbling, or residue around the keys.
- 03
Damaged ribbon cable or connector
Part replacementThe ribbon cable connecting the keypad to the control board can develop a fault at the connector points, particularly if it has been kinked or exposed to heat. Check for visible damage or a loose connection at both ends of the ribbon.
- 04
Faulty electronic control board
Part replacementIn less common cases, a damaged input circuit on the control board itself can misread keypad signals and trigger the F7 code even when the keypad is functioning correctly. This is typically suspected only after keypad replacement does not resolve the fault.
