Samsung Heat Pump Error Code E131

E131 indicates an open or short circuit fault in the digital compressor discharge temperature sensor circuit on the outdoor unit. The control board cannot get a valid temperature reading from the sensor that monitors how hot the compressor discharge line is. The system typically shuts down compressor operation to protect components until the fault is resolved.

A power reset may temporarily clear the fault code, but if the underlying cause is a failed sensor, broken wire, or damaged connector, the error will return once the unit restarts and the PCB attempts to read the discharge temperature again. A reset is only a lasting fix if a transient connection issue, such as a briefly unseated connector, was responsible for the fault.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. A simple connector reseating involves only a service call fee, typically in the range of $75 to $150. Replacing a discharge temperature sensor generally costs between $100 and $250 including parts and labor. If the outdoor PCB has failed and requires replacement, costs can range from $400 to $900 or more depending on the unit model and labor rates in your area.

The first diagnostic step, checking whether the sensor connector has separated from the outdoor PCB and reconnecting it, is something a confident DIYer can attempt after disconnecting power to the unit. However, if the connector is secure and the sensor or wiring needs testing or replacement, the work involves accessing refrigerant-side components and live electrical circuits in the outdoor unit, which is best handled by a qualified HVAC technician.

It is not advisable to continue running the heat pump with E131 active. The discharge temperature sensor protects the compressor from overheating, and operating without a valid sensor signal removes that protection. Continued operation could result in compressor damage, which is significantly more expensive to repair than the sensor itself.
