E152 means the outdoor unit fan motor is not spinning at the speed the system commanded, with a difference of more than 100 RPM detected between the actual and target speeds. The system triggers this fault to prevent damage from inadequate airflow across the outdoor coil. The most common causes include a physically blocked or locked fan blade, a failing motor, or a faulty capacitor.

It is not advisable to continue running the system with an active E152 fault. A fan motor that is underperforming or locked can cause the compressor to overheat due to inadequate heat exchange, potentially leading to compressor failure, which is a much more costly repair. The system may shut itself down automatically as a protective measure, but powering it off manually until the fault is resolved is the safer approach.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. Replacing a run capacitor is typically the least expensive fix, often falling in the range of $75 to $200 including labor. Fan motor replacement generally runs between $200 and $500 depending on the model and labor rates in your area. Control board replacement is the most expensive scenario, potentially ranging from $400 to $800 or more. A proper diagnosis is needed before any parts are ordered.

Some steps are safe for a homeowner, such as inspecting the outdoor unit for visible debris or ice blocking the fan blade after powering the unit off. However, testing capacitors, measuring motor winding resistance, and diagnosing control board signals require electrical knowledge and proper tools. If the fan blade spins freely and no obvious obstruction is present, a qualified technician should handle further diagnosis.

A reset may temporarily clear the error code, but it will return if the underlying cause is not addressed. If the fan motor is mechanically bound, electrically failing, or the capacitor is weak, the RPM discrepancy will reappear as soon as the system attempts to run the outdoor fan again.
