E470 indicates that the indoor unit's EVAP OUT temperature sensor has been detected as separated from the evaporator heat exchanger, based on abnormal temperature differential readings during operation. The control board monitors sensor values continuously and flags this code when the EVAP OUT sensor appears to be reading ambient air rather than coil temperature. The system shuts down to prevent incorrect refrigerant management caused by unreliable sensor data.

It is not recommended to continue operating the system with E470 active. A detached EVAP OUT sensor means the control board is not receiving accurate coil temperature data, which can lead to improper refrigerant flow decisions and potential system damage over time. The heat pump will likely shut itself down to protect against this condition regardless.

A power reset may temporarily clear the E470 code, but the error will return if the EVAP OUT sensor is still not properly secured to the evaporator coil. The control board will detect the same abnormal temperature differential as soon as normal operation resumes. The underlying physical issue with the sensor must be corrected before the error is permanently resolved.

In some cases, a knowledgeable DIYer can open the indoor unit panel, locate the EVAP OUT sensor on the evaporator coil outlet, and resecure it to the coil surface. However, if the sensor or its wiring is damaged, replacement requires sourcing the correct thermistor part and basic electrical skills. If you are not comfortable working inside the indoor unit or identifying components, a certified HVAC technician is the safer choice.

If the sensor simply needs to be reattached, the repair may only involve a service call fee, which typically ranges from $75 to $150 depending on your location. If the thermistor itself needs to be replaced, parts and labor combined generally fall in the range of $100 to $300. Wiring harness repairs can vary more widely depending on the extent of the damage.
