What Pan Detection means on a Samsung range
The Pan Detection error on Samsung induction ranges occurs when the cooking zone's inverter circuit cannot confirm the presence of suitable cookware on the inductive coil. Induction cooking relies on a magnetic field generated by the Inverter PCB to induce heat in ferromagnetic cookware. When the inverter coil energizes and fails to detect an appropriate load, either because no pan is present, the pan is too small for the zone, or the pan material is not ferromagnetic, the control system registers a pan detection fault and suspends operation of that zone.
The detection process involves communication between the Inverter PCB and the Touch PCB. The Inverter PCB drives the induction coil and monitors the resonant feedback to determine whether a compatible pan is present. This signal is relayed to the Touch PCB, which processes the input and controls the user interface. A wiring fault between these two boards can cause the system to misread or lose the detection signal entirely, triggering the error even when proper cookware is in place.
The most straightforward cause is simply using incompatible or undersized cookware. However, when cookware is confirmed to be correct and the error persists, the wiring harness connecting the Inverter PCB to the Touch PCB should be inspected for loose connectors, damaged insulation, or broken leads. If wiring is intact and the error continues, both the Touch PCB assembly and the Inverter PCB are candidates for replacement, as either board can be responsible for a failed detection handshake.

Common causes of Pan Detection
- 01
Incompatible or non-ferromagnetic cookware
Wiring / connectionInduction zones require cookware made of magnetic materials such as cast iron or magnetic stainless steel. Aluminum, copper, glass, and non-magnetic stainless steel will not be detected and will trigger this error immediately.
- 02
Cookware too small for the cooking zone
Wiring / connectionEach induction zone has a minimum pan diameter requirement. If the cookware base does not cover enough of the coil area, the inverter cannot register a sufficient load and the error is displayed.
- 03
No cookware placed on the active zone
Wiring / connectionActivating a cooking zone without placing any pan on it will immediately produce the pan detection error, as there is no load for the inverter coil to sense.
- 04
Faulty or loose wiring between the Inverter PCB and Touch PCB
Wiring / connectionA damaged wiring harness or a loose connector between the two boards can prevent the detection signal from being communicated correctly, causing the error even when proper cookware is in use. Inspect connectors and wiring for signs of damage, burning, or disconnection.
- 05
Failed Touch PCB or Inverter PCB
Part replacementIf wiring checks out and the cookware is confirmed compatible, one or both of these circuit boards may have failed internally. Replacement of the Touch PCB assembly and the Inverter PCB is the prescribed repair when all other causes have been ruled out.
