Pan detection error; occurs when cookware is unsuitable, too small, or no cookware has been placed on the cooking zone.

First step from the service manual

Verify proper pans being used. Check wiring from Inverter PCB to Touch PCB. If wiring is OK, replace Ass'y Touch PCB and Inverter PCB.

What PD means on a Samsung range

The PD error code on a Samsung induction range indicates a pan detection failure on one or more cooking zones. Induction cooktops rely on the Inverter PCB to generate a high-frequency alternating magnetic field beneath each zone. When cookware is placed on the surface, the ferromagnetic base of the pan interacts with this field, allowing the system to confirm a suitable load is present. The Touch PCB reads and communicates this detection status. If the system cannot confirm a valid pan is present, it suspends power delivery to that zone and displays PD.

The most common trigger is incompatible or undersized cookware. Induction cooking requires pots and pans with a ferromagnetic base, typically cast iron or magnetic stainless steel. Cookware that is too small for the selected zone, made of aluminum, copper, glass, or non-magnetic stainless steel will not be detected. A simple magnet test on the bottom of the cookware can confirm compatibility before pursuing electrical diagnostics.

If proper cookware is confirmed and the error persists, the fault shifts toward the electronics. The wiring harness connecting the Inverter PCB to the Touch PCB should be inspected for loose connectors, damaged insulation, or corrosion at the terminals. A wiring fault can interrupt the detection signal even when the cookware and zone are otherwise functional. If the wiring checks out, the Touch PCB or Inverter PCB may have failed internally, and replacement of one or both assemblies is the indicated repair path.

Common causes of PD

  1. 01

    Incompatible cookware material

    Wiring / connection

Aluminum, copper, glass, and non-magnetic stainless steel pots will not be detected by the induction zone. Test the cookware with a magnet: if the magnet does not stick firmly to the base, the pan is not compatible.

  2. 02

Cookware too small for the zone

    Wiring / connection

If the diameter of the pan base is smaller than the minimum required for the selected cooking zone, the sensor will not register a valid load. Try using a larger pan or selecting a smaller zone.

  3. 03

No cookware placed on the zone

    Wiring / connection

The PD code will trigger immediately if a cooking zone is activated without any pot or pan on it. Placing suitable cookware on the zone will clear the error in this scenario.

  4. 04

Loose or damaged wiring between Inverter PCB and Touch PCB

    Wiring / connection

A disconnected connector, pinched wire, or corroded terminal on the harness between these two boards can prevent the pan detection signal from completing properly. Inspect all connectors and wiring for visible damage or looseness.

  5. 05

Failed Touch PCB or Inverter PCB

    Part replacement

If wiring and cookware have both been confirmed as acceptable and the error persists, one or both circuit boards have likely failed internally. Replacement of the Touch PCB assembly, the Inverter PCB, or both is the recommended repair.

Frequently asked questions about PD

What does PD mean on a Samsung range?
PD is a pan detection error on Samsung induction ranges. It means the cooking zone cannot identify suitable cookware on the surface. The zone will not produce heat until the system detects a compatible pot or pan. The error can be caused by wrong cookware type, undersized pans, or a fault in the detection electronics.
How do I fix the PD error on my Samsung induction range?
Start by confirming your cookware is induction compatible, which means it must have a magnetic base. Hold a magnet to the bottom of the pot; it should stick firmly. Make sure the pan is large enough for the zone and centered on it. If the error continues with correct cookware, a technician should inspect the wiring between the Inverter PCB and Touch PCB, and replace those components if the wiring is intact.
Is it safe to keep using my Samsung range when it shows the PD error?
The PD error actually prevents the affected cooking zone from activating, so there is no immediate heat-related safety hazard from the code itself. However, you should not attempt to bypass the error or force operation. If the error is caused by a board fault, continued use could potentially worsen the damage to the electronics.
Will resetting my Samsung range clear the PD error?
A power reset may temporarily clear the PD display, but the error will return as soon as you activate the affected zone without compatible cookware, or if the underlying electrical fault is still present. Resetting the range is not a fix for wiring or PCB-related causes of the PD code.
How much does it cost to repair the PD error on a Samsung range?
If the fix is simply switching to compatible cookware, there is no repair cost beyond the price of new pots if needed. If the Inverter PCB or Touch PCB needs to be replaced, parts and labor costs typically range from around $150 to $400 or more depending on the specific model and service rates in your area. Getting a diagnosis from a qualified technician before ordering parts is advisable.
