Samsung Refrigerator Error Code 33E

The 33E code means the freezer defrost heater circuit has a fault. Samsung's control board logs this error when the defrost cycle runs for 80 minutes without completing, which indicates the heater is not generating enough heat to melt frost off the evaporator coil. The root cause can be a shorted heater, a broken or disconnected wire, a separated heater housing, or a blown bimetal thermal fuse.

Resetting the refrigerator by unplugging it may temporarily clear the 33E display, but the error will return if the underlying defrost circuit fault is not repaired. The control board logs 33E based on actual heater performance data, not a random glitch, so the faulty component must be identified and replaced to permanently resolve the code.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. A bimetal thermal fuse is typically a low-cost part, usually in the range of $5 to $25, while a defrost heater assembly generally runs between $30 and $80 in parts. If a technician is hired for diagnosis and labor, total repair costs can range from $100 to $250 or more depending on your location and service rates.

Start by disconnecting the CN70 connector at the main PCB and measuring resistance between the Brown and Gray wires. A reading of approximately 63 ohms is normal. A reading of 0 ohms means the heater is shorted and needs replacement. An infinite reading means there is an open circuit in the heater element, thermal fuse, or wiring. Trace the circuit from the connector to the heater housing to find the broken component, then replace whichever part has failed.

Continuing to run the refrigerator with an active 33E error is not recommended for an extended period. Without a functioning defrost heater, frost will accumulate on the evaporator coil, progressively blocking airflow and reducing cooling in both the freezer and refrigerator sections. Over time, this can also cause the compressor to overwork and potentially fail.
