The control board tracks each separation event and triggers this code once the threshold is exceeded. It is primarily a mechanical alignment or installation fault rather than an electrical component failure.

Error code 40 is not a safety hazard in the traditional sense, but it does mean your ice maker is not functioning correctly and ice production will be affected. Leaving the issue unresolved for an extended period can stress related components in the ice room. Addressing the alignment or mounting issue promptly will prevent further faults from developing.

If the fix is simply releveling the refrigerator or reseating the ice maker kit, there is no parts cost involved. If mounting clips or rail guides need replacement, parts typically range from $10 to $40 depending on the specific components.
