Error code 49 means the refrigerator detected an over-voltage condition on its AC input. The protective threshold is 155V for 110-127V models and 310V for 220-240V models. When voltage exceeds these limits, the unit shuts down the compressor to prevent damage to internal components. The fault can stem from the home power supply or from a defective control board.

The error code itself is a safety feature, not a hazard. It triggers a protective shutdown to prevent compressor and board damage from excessive voltage. However, the underlying cause, such as a true overvoltage condition at the outlet, can be a broader electrical safety concern for your home and should be investigated promptly by a qualified electrician.

Unplugging the refrigerator for a few minutes and restoring power may clear the code if the error was triggered by a temporary voltage spike that has since resolved. However, if the underlying cause, whether high supply voltage or a faulty PCB, is still present, the code will return. Always check the input voltage and PCB condition before assuming a reset has permanently resolved the fault.

Start by measuring the AC voltage at the wall outlet using a multimeter to confirm whether the supply voltage is actually too high. If the voltage is within normal range, inspect the bottom side of the main PCB for cracked or cold solder joints and repair any that are found. If the supply voltage is elevated, contact your utility provider or an electrician. A persistently faulty PCB with normal supply voltage will require board replacement.
