The 5Er code indicates a freezer defrost sensor error. It activates when the sensor reports a temperature above 65°C or below -50°C, or when the control board detects a disconnection, short circuit, contact failure, or physical separation of the sensor housing. The fault is located in the circuit running between the freezer defrost sensor and the main PCB at connector CN20.

A reset may temporarily clear the 5Er code from the display, but the error will return if the underlying fault in the defrost sensor circuit is not repaired. Power cycling the refrigerator does not fix a failed thermistor, a damaged harness, or a loose connector. The root cause must be corrected for the code to stay cleared.

Repair costs vary depending on the faulty component. A replacement defrost sensor thermistor typically costs between $15 and $50 for the part alone. A new wiring harness may run $30 to $80. If the main PCB is at fault, parts alone can range from $100 to $300 or more. Adding professional labor will generally increase the total cost by $80 to $200 depending on your location and service provider.

Some causes of the 5Er error are DIY-friendly. Reseating the wiring connector at Main PCB CN20 and inspecting the sensor housing for physical separation require no special tools. If a voltage measurement at CN20 pins 5 to 7 falls outside the 1.0V to 4.5V range after checking connections, the sensor thermistor or wiring harness likely needs replacement, which is a moderate-level repair. Main PCB replacement is more complex and may warrant professional service.

Continued use with an active 5Er code carries some risk to food safety. Without a functioning defrost sensor, the freezer may fail to defrost on schedule, leading to ice buildup on the evaporator and reduced cooling efficiency. If temperatures in the fresh food or freezer compartments begin rising, the refrigerator should not be relied upon to safely store perishables until the sensor issue is resolved.
