Samsung Refrigerator Error Code 61

Error code 61 indicates an ice duct heater fault. The refrigerator's control board measures the resistance of the ice duct heater through connectors CN79 and CN51 and expects a reading of 135 ohms plus or minus 7 percent. A reading of 0 ohms means the heater has shorted, and an infinite reading means the heater element or wiring has an open circuit.

The refrigerator's cooling and fresh food functions are generally unaffected by this fault, so food safety is not an immediate concern. However, ice dispensing may be impaired and ice could build up around the duct opening over time. It is best to address the fault promptly to prevent secondary issues from frost accumulation.

A reset may temporarily clear the error code from the display, but the code will return if the underlying heater circuit fault has not been corrected. The control board continuously monitors the resistance of the ice duct heater, so any reading outside the acceptable 135-ohm range will trigger the error again after the refrigerator restarts. Resetting without repairing is not a solution.

A knowledgeable DIYer can diagnose this fault using a multimeter. Power off the refrigerator, disconnect the CN79 wire from the main PCB, and measure resistance between CN79 ORG and CN51 W/BLK. If the reading is outside the 125.5 to 144.5 ohm range, the heater or its wiring needs to be replaced. Actual component replacement may require accessing the ice maker assembly, which adds complexity.
