Error code 84 is a compressor motor restriction error. It activates when the compressor is detected as restricted for more than 5 seconds, runs above 5000 RPM for over 10 seconds, or there is a short or fault in the compressor drive circuit. The refrigerator triggers this code to protect the compressor and control board from further damage.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error from the display, but if the underlying fault in the compressor circuit or control board is still present, code 84 will return. Resetting is useful to confirm whether the fault is persistent, but it does not repair the root cause. A proper diagnosis of the resistors and compressor is still required.

Repair costs vary depending on whether the fault is in the control board or the compressor itself. Inverter or control board replacement typically ranges from $150 to $400 including parts and labor. Compressor replacement is more expensive, generally falling between $400 and $700 or more depending on the model and labor rates in your area. Confirming the faulty component through resistance testing before ordering parts helps avoid unnecessary expenses.

However, the primary diagnostic step requires measuring resistance at specific resistors (R505 through R513) on the board, which requires a multimeter and familiarity with PCB components. It is not advisable to continue normal use when error code 84 is active. The compressor is either struggling or has stopped functioning, meaning the refrigerator is likely not maintaining safe food storage temperatures.
