8Er is an ice maker sensor error indicating a problem with the temperature sensor in the ice maker. It can be triggered by a disconnected or shorted sensor, physical separation of the sensor housing, a wiring fault, or a temperature reading that falls outside the valid range of -50°C to 65°C. The main PCB monitors the sensor circuit at connector CN90 pins 11 and 13, where voltage should read between 1.0V and 4.5V during normal operation.

The 8Er error affects the ice maker sensor specifically, so the refrigerator and freezer compartments should continue cooling normally. However, ice production may be disrupted or halted. The error does not represent an immediate safety hazard, but it should be diagnosed and repaired to restore full ice maker function and prevent the ice maker from operating without reliable temperature feedback.

A power reset may temporarily clear the 8Er code from the display, but the error will return if the underlying fault in the ice maker sensor circuit is still present. Resetting is useful for confirming whether the fault is intermittent, but it does not repair a failed sensor, damaged harness, or loose connector. The error should be diagnosed and corrected rather than repeatedly reset.

Some causes of 8Er are DIY-friendly. Start by inspecting the ice maker sensor connector and harness for loose connections, visible damage, or corrosion. If the connector is fully seated and the harness looks intact, testing voltage at CN90 pins 11 and 13 on the main PCB requires a multimeter and basic electrical comfort. Replacing the sensor is a moderate repair, but replacing the main PCB is generally best left to a technician.

Repair costs depend on the root cause. A replacement ice maker temperature sensor typically costs between $20 and $60 for the part alone. If the harness needs replacement, parts usually fall in a similar range.
