The DE error code indicates a damper motor disorder. Specifically, the refrigerator's control board cannot confirm that the damper reed switch changed state (ON or OFF) during more than one minute of motor operation. This points to a problem with the damper motor, its reed switch, its position magnet, or the control relay on the main PCB that drives the motor.

Start by power cycling the unit to trigger self-diagnosis. Then inspect the damper motor wiring harness connector for loose, bent, or corroded pins and reseat it firmly. Check that the position magnet is securely mounted on the damper assembly and that the reed switch is properly aligned with the magnet. If the connector and magnet are intact, test the reed switch for continuity and check whether the damper motor itself turns freely. A failed motor, reed switch, or main PCB relay will require part replacement.

Repair cost depends on which component has failed. Replacing a reed switch or position magnet is relatively inexpensive, typically in the range of $20 to $60 for parts. A geared damper motor assembly generally costs between $50 and $150 in parts. If the main PCB control relay or the full board needs replacement, parts alone can range from $100 to $300 or more. Turning the main power OFF and then back ON initiates a self-diagnosis cycle and is the recommended first step. If the underlying cause, such as a loose connector or a temporary electrical glitch, is resolved by the reset, the code may clear. However, if a hardware component like the reed switch, magnet, or motor is faulty, the DE code will return because the fault condition still exists.

The DE code is not a safety hazard in the sense of fire or electrical danger, but it does affect food safety. A non-functioning damper can cause one compartment to receive too much or too little cold air, leading to temperatures that fall outside the safe range for food storage. Address the fault promptly to avoid food spoilage.
