E1 on a Samsung refrigerator means the main control board has detected an open or short circuit in the freezer temperature sensor circuit. The board checks for a voltage between 1.0V and 4.5V at connector CN30 pins 3 and 9 to confirm the sensor is working. If that voltage is missing or out of range, the E1 fault is triggered. This can affect the freezer's ability to maintain proper temperature.

It is not recommended to continue relying on the refrigerator normally while the E1 error is active. Because the freezer temperature sensor is not functioning correctly, the control board cannot accurately regulate freezer temperatures. Food safety could be at risk if the freezer is not maintaining proper temperatures, even if the appliance appears to be running.

A power reset may temporarily clear the E1 error code from the display, but the fault will return if the underlying problem is not repaired. Resetting does not fix a failed thermistor, damaged wiring, or a faulty PCB. The reset can be useful during diagnostics to confirm whether the fault is intermittent, but it should not be treated as a permanent solution.

Some causes of the E1 error are DIY-friendly, such as reseating a loose connector at CN30 or running a defrost cycle to clear frost from around the sensor. Replacing the freezer thermistor is also a manageable repair for someone comfortable working with appliances. However, if the main PCB is the cause, replacement is more complex and may be better handled by a qualified technician.
