F-1-b indicates an error with the F Sensor, the temperature sensor located in the freezer compartment. The code is triggered by a disconnection, short circuit, poor connector contact, sensor housing separation, or a temperature reading outside the acceptable range of -58 degrees F to 149 degrees F. The main PCB monitors this sensor and flags the fault when it cannot receive a valid signal. Without a working sensor, the refrigerator cannot reliably regulate freezer temperature.

It is not advisable to continue relying on the refrigerator for food storage while this error is active. Because the freezer temperature sensor is not functioning correctly, the control board cannot accurately monitor or maintain safe freezer temperatures. Food in the freezer may be at risk if the cooling system is not operating properly as a result of the fault.

A power cycle or reset may temporarily clear the F-1-b code from the display, but the error will return if the underlying fault in the sensor circuit has not been corrected. Resetting the refrigerator is useful as a first step to confirm whether the fault is intermittent, but it is not a fix for a failed sensor, damaged wiring, or a faulty connector. Proper diagnosis using the CN30 voltage check is needed to confirm the root cause before the error will stay clear.

Some causes of F-1-b are DIY-friendly, such as reseating a loose connector at CN30, securing a sensor that has separated from its housing, or inspecting the wiring harness for obvious damage. To confirm the sensor circuit is at fault, you would need a multimeter to check the voltage between pins 5 and 8 on CN30, which should read between 1.0V and 4.5V. If the sensor itself has failed, replacing it is a moderately straightforward repair for someone comfortable working with appliance electronics.

If only a connector needs reseating or the sensor housing needs repositioning, there may be no parts cost at all, just a service call fee if a technician is involved. A replacement freezer temperature sensor typically costs in the range of $15 to $50 for the part. If the main PCB is the cause of the fault, board replacement can range from $100 to $300 or more for the part alone, plus labor if professionally repaired.
