F-1 or F-DEF indicates a fault in the freezer compartment defrost circuit. The error can be caused by a failed defrost heater, a blown thermal fuse, a wiring disconnection or short circuit, a loose heater housing connection, or a defrost cycle that did not complete within the 70-minute time limit. The refrigerator logs this code to alert you that the defrost system requires inspection and repair.

Continuing to run the refrigerator with this error is not recommended for extended periods. A non-functioning defrost system will allow frost to accumulate on the evaporator coils, which will progressively reduce cooling efficiency and can eventually block airflow entirely.
