The F-1 error code indicates a problem with the freezer compartment defrost circuit. It can be triggered by a faulty defrost heater, a blown thermal fuse, damaged or disconnected wiring, a loose connector at the main PCB, or a defrost cycle that fails to complete within 70 minutes. The control board detects these conditions by monitoring the defrost circuit connected at PCB connectors CN70 and CN71.

A power reset may temporarily clear the F-1 display, but the error will return if the underlying defrost circuit fault is not repaired. Because this code can be caused by a permanently blown thermal fuse or a burned-out heater element, resetting the appliance does not fix the root problem. The defrost system should be tested and repaired to prevent ongoing frost buildup on the evaporator coils.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. A thermal fuse is typically the least expensive fix, with parts generally ranging from $10 to $30. A defrost heater assembly can range from $30 to $100 or more in parts. If a professional technician is needed, labor costs typically add $80 to $200 depending on location and service provider. Control board replacement, if required, is usually the most expensive option and can bring total costs to $200 to $400 or higher.

Start by disconnecting connectors CN70 and CN71 from the main PCB and measuring resistance between the CN70 Brown wire and the CN71 Orange wire. The reading should be approximately 102 or 220 ohms within a 7% tolerance. If the reading is out of range, inspect the thermal fuse, defrost heater, and wiring harness for damage or failure, and replace the defective component. If the wiring and heater test correctly, the issue may involve the defrost sensor or the control board.

Continued use with an active F-1 error is not recommended for long periods. Without a functioning defrost system, frost will accumulate on the evaporator coils and eventually block airflow, causing the refrigerator and freezer sections to lose cooling ability. Food spoilage becomes a risk the longer the issue goes unaddressed. The refrigerator itself does not pose an immediate safety hazard, but the defrost fault should be diagnosed promptly.
