The defrost system may not operate correctly while this fault is active.

Short-term use is generally possible, but with a non-functioning defrost sensor the refrigerator cannot reliably terminate its defrost cycle based on accurate evaporator temperature data. Over time this can lead to excessive frost buildup on the evaporator coil, reduced cooling performance, or a defrost heater that runs longer than intended. It is best to address the fault promptly to avoid secondary damage.

Repair cost depends on the root cause. A defrost sensor thermistor is a relatively inexpensive part, typically in the range of $15 to $50 for the component alone.
