Samsung Refrigerator Error Code F-DEF Error (High-resistance)

The F-DEF (High-resistance) error means the freezer defrost heater circuit has a fault and the defrost cycle failed to complete after running for more than 100 minutes. The issue can be a failed heater element, a blown thermal fuse, a wiring disconnection, a short circuit, or a loose connector contact. The control board detects that the heater is not performing correctly and triggers this code to alert you to the problem.

A power reset may temporarily clear the error code from the display, but it will not fix the underlying fault. If the defrost heater circuit has a failed component such as a blown thermal fuse or open heater element, the defrost cycle will fail again and the code will return. The root cause must be diagnosed and repaired for the error to clear permanently.

Repair costs depend on which component has failed. A replacement thermal fuse is typically an inexpensive part, with the part itself ranging from roughly $5 to $20, though labor charges for a service call can add $75 to $200 or more depending on your area. A complete defrost heater assembly generally costs between $20 and $80 for the part. If the main PCB is at fault, replacement boards can range from $100 to $300 or higher, making professional diagnosis beforehand especially worthwhile.

A knowledgeable DIYer can diagnose this error by disconnecting the CN70 and CN81 connectors from the main PCB and using a multimeter to measure resistance between CN70 pin 5 and CN81 pin 1, comparing it to the 63 ohm target value. If the reading is out of range, the thermal fuse or heater element is likely faulty and needs replacement. However, accessing the freezer evaporator compartment requires removing panels and partially disassembling the freezer interior, which may be more comfortable for experienced technicians.

Continuing to use the refrigerator with an active F-DEF error is not recommended for extended periods. Without a functioning defrost cycle, ice accumulates on the evaporator coil and progressively blocks airflow, which will cause the refrigerator and freezer to lose cooling ability. Food safety can become a concern once temperatures begin rising, so the fault should be addressed as soon as possible.
