This error indicates the freezer evaporator sensor has been detected as either open or shorted by the MICOM control board. An OPEN fault triggers when the sensor reads below -50°C, and a SHORT fault triggers when it reads above +50°C. Both conditions correspond to a MICOM input voltage outside the valid 0.5V to 4.5V range. The fault points to a failed sensor, broken wiring, or a bad connector in the sensor circuit.

Continued use is not recommended without addressing the fault. The evaporator sensor plays a key role in controlling defrost cycles, and a faulty sensor can lead to ice buildup on the evaporator coils or improper cooling in the freezer. Food spoilage is a real risk if the cooling system is compromised. Diagnosing and repairing the fault promptly will protect both your food and the refrigerator's compressor and defrost components.

Repair costs vary depending on what component needs replacement. A replacement evaporator sensor part typically runs in the range of $15 to $50, making it one of the more affordable fixes if the wiring is intact. A reset may temporarily clear the error from the display, but it will return as soon as the MICOM re-reads the out-of-range voltage from the faulty sensor circuit. The underlying cause, whether a failed sensor, broken wire, or bad connector, must be repaired before the error will stay cleared. Resetting without fixing the fault does not restore normal sensor operation.
