The FZ-DEF error means the freezer defrost heater ran continuously for more than 70 minutes without the defrost cycle completing. The refrigerator's control board detected this as an abnormal condition and flagged the fault. The cause is typically a failed thermal fuse, open bimetal thermostat, broken wiring, or a shorted or disconnected heater element. Diagnosing the specific cause requires a resistance measurement at the CN70 connector on the main PCB.

Continuing to use the refrigerator with an active FZ-DEF error is not recommended for extended periods. Without a functioning defrost cycle, frost will accumulate on the evaporator coils, blocking airflow and eventually causing the refrigerator and freezer to lose their ability to maintain safe temperatures. Food safety can become a concern within a day or two if the cooling performance degrades significantly.

Repair costs depend heavily on which component has failed. Replacing a thermal fuse or bimetal thermostat typically involves lower parts costs, generally in the range of $10 to $40 for the parts, plus labor if a technician is hired. A full defrost heater assembly replacement may run $30 to $100 or more in parts. Replacing those components is generally straightforward. However, if the heater assembly itself is shorted or the main PCB is faulty, those repairs are more involved and may be better handled by a technician.

A power reset may temporarily clear the FZ-DEF error code from the display, but the underlying fault will cause it to return once the refrigerator attempts and fails another defrost cycle. Resetting without repairing the defrost circuit does not fix the problem. The error will continue to recur until the faulty component, whether a thermal fuse, heater, wiring, or bimetal, is identified and replaced.
