However, if the underlying wiring fault is a short circuit, it should be addressed promptly to avoid any further electrical damage to the main PCB or connected components.

A reset may temporarily clear the R-1 code from the display, but the code will return if the underlying sensor circuit fault has not been corrected. Resetting is useful for confirming whether the error is intermittent or persistent, but it is not a fix. The voltage at the main PCB sensor pins should be verified to fall within 1.0V to 4.5V before the repair is considered complete.

Some causes of the R-1 code are DIY-friendly, particularly a loose or unplugged sensor connector, which only requires reseating the connector firmly. However, diagnosing the fault accurately requires a multimeter to check voltage at the main PCB test points and possibly measure sensor resistance. Replacing the ice maker sensor or main PCB is more involved and may be better handled by a qualified technician.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. Replacing an ice maker temperature sensor typically falls in the range of $50 to $150 for parts, with additional labor costs if a technician is hired.
