Continued use with an active R-1 error is not recommended for extended periods. Without a functioning defrost cycle, frost will accumulate on the fresh food evaporator coils and progressively reduce airflow and cooling capacity. Food safety can be compromised if temperatures rise. Address the fault as soon as possible to prevent further issues.

A power reset may temporarily clear the displayed error, but if the underlying defrost component has failed, the code will return once the refrigerator attempts its next defrost cycle. The resistance check at CN70 and CN71 is necessary to confirm whether the heater circuit is intact. A reset alone should not be treated as a fix unless the cause (such as a loose connector) has already been corrected.

Some causes of this error are DIY-friendly, such as reseating loose connectors at CN70 or CN71 or replacing a door gasket that is allowing warm air to create excessive frost. However, replacing the defrost heater element or thermal fuse requires disassembling the fresh food compartment interior and working with electrical components, which is best approached by technicians comfortable with appliance repair. Always unplug the refrigerator before inspecting or replacing any parts.
