Samsung Refrigerator Error Code R-1 (R-FAN Error)

The R-1 code means the main control board has detected a fault in the fresh food compartment inner fan motor circuit. The fault can be caused by a feedback signal line contact error, a disconnected or broken motor wire, or a failed motor. The board monitors a feedback signal from the fan to confirm it is spinning correctly, and any interruption in that signal triggers this code. Food in the fresh food section may begin warming if the issue is not resolved.

It is not recommended to continue using the refrigerator normally with an active R-1 error. Without the fresh food fan circulating air, temperatures in the fresh food compartment can rise to unsafe levels for perishable foods. Move temperature-sensitive items to a cooler or alternate refrigerator until the fault is repaired.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. If the fix is simply reseating a loose connector, there may be no parts cost at all. A replacement R-FAN motor typically runs in the range of $30 to $80 for the part, plus labor if a technician is used. A main PCB replacement is significantly more expensive, often ranging from $100 to $300 or more for the part alone, making an accurate diagnosis before ordering parts especially important.

Some causes of the R-1 error are DIY-friendly, particularly checking and reseating the wire harness connectors at the fan motor and at the main PCB connector CN75. If the connectors are secure and the voltage at CN75 Orange to Gray reads within 7V to 12V, the motor itself is likely failed and will need replacement, which requires comfort with appliance disassembly. A failed main PCB is more complex to diagnose and replace, so a technician is advisable in that scenario.

A reset may temporarily clear the code from the display, but the R-1 error will return as soon as the control board attempts to operate the fan and receives no valid feedback signal. The underlying fault in the fan motor, wiring, or signal line must be corrected for the error to clear permanently.
