The R4 code indicates a Fresh Food compartment sensor error. The main control board has detected a temperature signal from the FF sensor that is either above 149°F (65°C) or below -58°F (-50°C), which falls outside the valid operating range. This is typically caused by a faulty sensor, a loose connector, or a damaged wire rather than an actual extreme temperature inside the fridge. Voltage between main PCB connectors CN30-6 and CN76-1 should read between 1.0V and 4.5V under normal conditions.

Operating the refrigerator with an active R4 error is not recommended for extended periods. Because the control board cannot reliably read the fresh food compartment temperature, cooling cycles may not regulate correctly, which puts food safety at risk. Monitor the actual interior temperature with a standalone thermometer and address the fault promptly.

A power reset may temporarily clear the R4 code from the display, but the error will return if the underlying sensor or wiring fault has not been corrected. Resetting without repairing the circuit does not fix the problem and may cause intermittent temperature control issues. A proper repair requires diagnosing and correcting the fault in the sensor circuit before the code will stay cleared.

Some causes of the R4 error are DIY-friendly, such as reseating a loose connector or repositioning a sensor that has slipped out of its housing. However, accurately diagnosing the fault requires a multimeter to check the voltage signal at the PCB connectors, which is a step better suited to technicians or experienced DIYers. Replacing the sensor or wiring harness requires basic appliance repair skills and comfort working with electrical connectors inside the unit.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. If only the FF temperature sensor needs replacement, parts typically range from $15 to $60, with labor adding $75 to $150 if a technician is involved.
