R5 on a Samsung refrigerator signals a condenser fan motor error, referred to as a C-FAN error. The control board has detected a problem with the BLDC condenser fan motor, which could be caused by a wiring fault, a loose feedback signal connection, a blocked fan blade, or a failed motor. This fan is critical to removing heat from the refrigeration system, so the issue should be addressed promptly to prevent cooling problems.

It is not recommended to continue using the refrigerator normally when R5 is active. A failed or restricted condenser fan means heat may not be properly dissipated from the condenser coils, which can cause the compressor to overheat and lead to more expensive damage over time. Food safety may also be at risk if the refrigerator cannot maintain proper temperatures.

A power reset may temporarily clear the R5 code from the display, but the error will return if the underlying problem is not resolved. Resetting the refrigerator by unplugging it for a few minutes is a reasonable first step to confirm the fault is persistent, but it does not repair a wiring fault, a failed motor, or a bad PCB. The diagnostic process should still be followed to identify and fix the actual cause.

Some causes of the R5 error are DIY-friendly. You can inspect and reseat the wiring connectors at the condenser fan motor and at the main PCB connector CN75, and you can check for any physical obstructions blocking the fan blade. However, testing the voltage at CN75 pins 5 and 6 requires a multimeter and some familiarity with working around live appliance circuits. Replacing the motor or main PCB is best handled by a technician if you are not comfortable with appliance electronics.

Repair costs vary depending on the root cause. Reseating a loose connector costs nothing beyond your time. A replacement condenser fan motor typically runs in the range of $30 to $100 for the part, plus labor if a technician is involved. A main PCB replacement is more expensive, generally ranging from $100 to $300 or more for the part alone. Getting a diagnostic done before purchasing parts will help you avoid unnecessary expenses.
