The RE code indicates that the refrigerator room sensor, a thermistor inside the fresh food compartment, has been detected as open-circuit or short-circuit by the unit's self-diagnostic system. The control board monitors this sensor continuously to regulate cooling. When the resistance reading is outside the expected range for the current temperature, the board logs the RE fault and may alter or stop normal cooling operation.

Start by turning the refrigerator off and back on, then check the R-sensor connector for a secure connection and any visible wiring damage. Use a multimeter to measure the sensor's resistance and compare it against the temperature-to-resistance table for your specific model. If the sensor reads open or shorted, replace the thermistor. If the sensor tests correctly, inspect the wiring harness for damage and test continuity back to the control board.

If only the R-sensor thermistor needs replacement, parts typically range from $15 to $60 depending on the model, and the repair is relatively straightforward. If the wiring harness or main control board is also involved, total repair costs including labor can range from $100 to $350 or more. Getting a diagnostic assessment from a qualified technician before ordering parts is recommended to avoid unnecessary expense.

Cycling the main power off and back on triggers a new self-diagnosis cycle and is the recommended first step. If the sensor or wiring fault is still present when power is restored, the RE code will return immediately. A power reset alone will not resolve the underlying hardware problem, but it can confirm whether the fault is intermittent or consistent.

Continuing to use the refrigerator with an active RE code is risky for food safety. Without a functioning room sensor, the control board cannot accurately regulate the internal temperature, and the compartment may run too warm or cycle improperly. Perishable foods should be moved to a working refrigerator until the sensor fault is diagnosed and repaired.
